Recent News

Changes to Nevada Child Care Regulation
Mr. Steve Miller, VP for Policy at the Nevada Policy Research Institute, wrote an article for the October 15, 2009 editorial page of the Las Vegas Review Journal explaining the NPRI's version of the effort to change child care licensing legislation to strengthen the quality of care for children in licensed programs in Nevada. The NevAEYC believes that several of his remarks were in error and sent a rebuttal to the RJ, which chose not to print it as of this date (November 30, 2009). The NevAEYC wrote a rebuttal which was reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors.

Early Childhood Workforce Systems Initiative
NAEYC is undertaking a new state professional development and career systems initiative, made possible by the generous support of the Birth to Five Alliance and Cornerstones for Kids. This initiative focuses on the underlying state public policies that support integrated early childhood professional development systemsfor all early childhood education professionals working with and on behalf of young children.

Pre-K Now: What Children Learn in Pre-K
The video, "What Children Learn in Pre-K", tells the stories of five young children who had an opportunity that is still unavailable to millions of children in the U.S.: the opportunity to attend a high-quality pre-kindergarten program. We were privileged to follow Erika, Nataya, Cesar, William, and Gillian-as well as their classmates, family members, and teachers-for a full school year to see how quality pre-k helps all children prepare for success in school and in life, and through the short video below we want to share what we witnessed.

Worthy Wage Day

May 1st is Worthy Wage Day - a day to honor the individuals who care for, nurture and help educate our young children.

Worthy Wage Day is a day of action built on locally-based organizing and outreach that takes place throughout the year. Activities are organized across the country to raise awareness and advocate for more public resources for early childhood educators.

Child care and preschool programs have difficulty attracting and keeping well-educated and trained individuals to work with young children. On a national average, more than a third of program staff leave the field each year, primarily due to the lack of adequate compensation, few benefits, and difficult working conditions. Only 18 occupations out of 770 surveyed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported having lower mean wages than child care workers.

Young children and their families benefit greatly from the work of early childhood teachers and providers. These educators deserve a worthy wage that reflects the skills and responsibilities involved in this vital work with children.
